A friend once said to me that successful people are lucky people with at least some sort of support system . Indeed this is the mindset of many people today and the only thing they succeed at is seeing the thousand and one reasons why everyone else is succeeding but they aren’t. If you are reading this and perhaps suspect that you might be unknowingly operating at such a level, now you know better. "NOTHING GOOD IS IMPOSSIBLE" dearly distinguished reader. Simulating Childbirth to Train Medical Students with HoloLens Technology

Medical training technology company CAE Healthcare has given birth to the latest example of how augmented reality can help to build practical operating room skills for doctors and nurses. The company's newest product is called LucinaAR, which harnesses the power of the Microsoft HoloLens.

CAE's Lucina physiological simulator system consists of life-sized models, or manikins, of a mother and fetus, with movable joints and expanding uterus. With the new LucinaAR app, students can now view various stages of pregnancy projected onto the mother manikin through the HoloLens.

For additional interactivity, students can use the HoloLens to elevate the 3D models above the physical model and walk around it. While it's designed to work with the physical simulator, LucinaAR also allows students to practice with just the HoloLens.

"The students nowadays, they come to the classroom with different expectations," said Dr. Robert Amyot, president of CAE Healthcare, in a video demonstrating the software. "They're expecting an interactive environment, something that's engaging."

In its current version, LucinaAR gives students a visual simulation of birth in a shoulder dystocia scenario, an uncommon pregnancy that presents a higher level of difficulty for delivery. With the HoloLens and the manikins, students can practice techniques for completing the process and view what's happening to the patient internally. CAE is also planning to expand the options on the LucinaAR app to include normal delivery and other emergency scenarios.

Augmented reality is quickly becoming a favourite within the healthcare industry for medical training, with the Microsoft HoloLens increasingly being the go-to device. Part of the reason for its popularity is the fact that the technology gives medical professionals real-time, three-dimensional views of the anatomy in ways that help them to better understand exactly what's happening in the context of a real patient as opposed to two-dimensional diagrams or mere training videos.

"This is the future of healthcare education," said Amyot. "Really, beyond the [spectacular] experience, there's an educational purpose that we're fulfilling that no other means or media has fulfilled up to now."

This Amazing Wearable Breast Pump Technology is changing the Breast Feeding game.

With groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommending that infants be exclusively breastfed for the first six months or longer, it’s no wonder the rates of breastfed babies have risen dramatically in the last 16 years. Statistics shows that in 2002, 37.9% of babies were breastfed for at least six months and 71.9% were breastfed for some time.  The latest available statistics, representing babies born, indicate that 57.6% are breastfed for six months and 83.2% at least for some time. Not all mothers are able to breastfeed their babies all the time, and so have to pump milk for storage to be used later. This is especially true for working mothers;

Pumping breast milk can be inconvenient, as most systems require a bulky system with lots of parts. The situation is improving, however, as companies are developing pumping systems that a woman can wear under her clothing. There are popular devices like the Willow Wearable Breast Pump shown above, a device that fits inside a woman’s bra while it collects milk in one-time-use bags. Chiaro Technology is the company that founded the Elvie Trainer, which is a mobile kegel exercise feedback device.

The same company recently announced the Elvie Pump. Described as “the world’s first silent wearable breast pump,” the Evie Pump is currently available on a waitlist status only. Designed to be worn inside a standard nursing bra, the Elvie Pump has five parts for easy assembly and cleaning. An associated iOS or Android app monitors milk volume in real-time, tracks pumping history for each breast and can control the pump remotely, although the app isn’t required to use the pump.

While the percentage of infants ever breastfed has increased ahead of the Health Promotion’s Healthy People 2020 Objectives, only about 25% of babies are breastfed exclusively for their first six months. Considering the busy lives of average mothers, systems to make pumping more comfortable and convenient could help to increase these percentages.

Three Exercise Routines That Can Preserve Your Kidney Function- VIDEO

It's another Saturday morning and today, I have decided to post a short video about exercise routines that can preserve not only our kidney function but practically the functioning of every other organ in the body. As we may know already, the kidneys play a very important role in excretion of waste from the body in the form of urine. The kidney also plays important roles in the formation of Vitamin D for skin health and red blood cells for oxygen transfer. Any form of good exercise will not only be followed up by drinking of water which is great for the kidneys but will also enhance excellent blood flow to all organs of the body in the process, leading to vital supply of oxygen and nutrients; a process that is continually necessary if organ function must remain optimal. Here's a video of my humble self demonstrating what I still believe to be the simplest routines you can make a habit.

NOTE:
Exercise alone cannot entirely take the place of visiting your primary Healthcare Providers for vital wellness checks to ensure that all is well. Monitoring vital biological numbers like our: heart rates, blood pressures and  blood sugar values or even our weight, will go a very long way, in addition to exercising , to making sure that we remain well overall; in regards to body organ function.

Life does not have to be too complex. Make your fitness routines as light as your body can tolerate and keep the routine as regular as possible. Instead of pushing yourself to the limit at one go, based on the "no pain-no gain" mantra and refusing to return because of muscle and joint aches. In the meantime, I'm taking a brisk walk to join other friends for soccer. Do well to return to this Blog for more simplistic fitness tips. We surely got you covered in a way that no other Blog does. Cheers Fam.

A Flesh-Eating STI Was Just Reported in England—Here's Why That's Not as Scary as It Sounds

If you’ve managed to escape any mentions in your news feed of the “flesh-eating” sexually transmitted disease recently reported in England, well, we’re sorry for bringing it up. But the horrifying headlines seem to be everywhere: As first reported by the Liverpool Echo, an unidentified woman in Southport, UK, was diagnosed in the last 12 months with donovanosis—a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause genital ulcers and, if not treated, can literally cause tissue to rot away.

Donovanosis is extremely rare in both the United Kingdom and the United States, but its description is graphic enough to both captivate and terrify us, nonetheless. To learn more about donovanosis—and how freaked out we should really be—Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH, chair of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Here’s what she thinks are the important facts behind the viral story.

What is donovanosis, and how common is it?

Also called granuloma inguinale, donovanosis is a bacterial infection that’s transmitted through vaginal or anal intercourse, or, rarely, through oral sex. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection is common in tropical and developing parts of the world, including India, Guyana, New Guinea, Central Australia, and Southern Africa.

It’s much, much less common in developed countries. In the United States, only about 100 cases are reported every year, most or all of which are acquired abroad. “Even among STD experts, I would wager to say that most doctors in the United States have not seen a case of this,” says Dr. Marrazzo. (She has, once, in a Caribbean native who’d recently relocated to the United States.)

The case in the news this week was reported as part of a survey of UK hospitals conducted by the online pharmacist Chemist 4 U. Some news outlets have reported that there have “been no prior cases” of donovanosis in the UK, and that this disease had been identified there “for the first time.”

But the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) told Health via email that there’s no basis to those statements. According to Public Health England, donovanosis is found in the UK, although it's “rarely diagnosed and reported.”

Is it really flesh-eating?

Medical descriptions of donovanosis often refer to ulcers or raised bumps that form one to 12 weeks after exposure. “It’s known for causing these really nasty-looking ulcers—they look like raw meat, beefy and really red, and they have a lot of blood supply so they bleed easily,” says Dr. Marrazzo.

“If they’re left untreated, they really can cause destruction of the tissue around them, which is why people say it’s ‘flesh-eating’ or that it causes skin to ‘rot away,’” Dr. Marrazzo adds. In advanced cases, according to the CDC, the ulcers can spread to the groin, lower abdomen, and upper thighs, and can develop secondary infections of their own.

However, Dr. Marrazzo adds, that shouldn’t happen with a timely diagnosis and proper treatment. When caught early, antibiotics can clear a donovanosis infection. It can sometimes reappear, however, and the sores can sometimes cause scarring or long-term damage.

So, should you worry?

If you’re not traveling to and having unprotected sex in countries where this disease is prevalent, the chances you’d be exposed to it are extremely slim, says Dr. Marrazzo. But that doesn’t mean this can’t serve as a reminder to practice safer sex with casual partners: Use a condom or another barrier method (for all forms of sexual contact, not just intercourse), and avoid contact with open wounds.

If you do notice strange ulcers or sores on your genitals, get them checked out right away. “Odds are, if you have something that is giving you this kind of complaint, it’s probably something much more common like syphilis or herpes,” says Dr. Marrazzo. (Regardless of the cause, you’ll need prompt treatment to keep it from getting worse.)

In fact, rates of syphilis have been soaring in the U.S. and the UK. “If there is a big public-health message here, it’s that we’ve seen a huge resurgence of syphilis,” says Dr. Marrazzo. “That’s definitely one thing we really should be looking out for.”
